CURRENT EXHIBITION

Hot House

Prints, Collages, and Drawings by Helen Popinchalk

Show dates: November 9th - Decebmer 21st, 2024

Open Gallery Hours: Saturdays, 10 - 2pm

SJ Art Consulting is honored to present Hot House, featuring prints, collages, and drawings by artist, educator, gallery director and curator, Helen Popinchalk.

The work exhibited in Hot House combines screen printing, gelatin printing, drawing and collage in bright compositions and color studies that explore bioluminescence and are inspired by the way that bees and pollinators see the world.  These mixed media pieces fluoresce in blacklight and are designed to change and shift in different colored light.

Bees and many other pollinators are able to see ultraviolet (UV) light – this extended spectrum makes visible patterns and markers on flowers that guide foraging bees to pollen and nectar.  The series in Hot House celebrate the beauty and mystery of the natural world.

Helen Popinchalk has been teaching at Simmons University since 2004 and organized exhibitions, installations and events for the print collective Trifecta Editions from 2013 to 2020. As director of Simmons’ Trustman Art Gallery, she has curated, installed and hosted related programming for twenty plus exhibitions over the past six years. As curator of the Simmons University art collection, she has collaborated with students, faculty and artists on Collecting & Connecting, a program that provides professionalizing opportunities for students and diversifies the University’s art collection.

GALLERY UPDATE

The Gallery at 43 Washington will close its doors on December 21, 2024. SJ Art Consulting plans to relocate to an office / showroom model in 2025, shifting its focus to working closely with our represented artists, preparing for art fairs, and hosting smaller, more intimate events. Since SJ Art Consulting was established in 2013, we've focused on supporting artists, but lately, demand from our residential and commercial clients has been outpacing sales at our Haverhill Gallery. This transition aims to increase art sales and enhance our long-term relationships.

Owner Sarah LoVasco expresses heartfelt gratitude to the exhibiting artists who contributed to the gallery's success over the past three years. Their trust and authenticity have shaped the gallery's identity. We curated 11 solo shows and hosted over 70 artists for our Small Works Show! LoVasco also thanks the friends and supporters of these artists for their presence, highlighting the importance of creative gathering spaces.

We encourage everyone to stay connected with SJ Art Consulting as it continues its work in the New England art scene and looks forward to sharing exciting announcements in the year ahead.

PAST EXHIBITIONS

The Circus Life and Other Stories

Artwork by Artist and Curator Deborah Whitney

Show dates: Sept 14th - Oct 20th, 2024

Gallery Hours: Saturdays, 10am - 2pm

Deb Whitney has worked for forty one years as an art handler and curator.  The amalgamation of these experiences has materially informed her art.  Often the only woman on the job in the early days, the one sent for coffee and always expected to go with the flow.  She found herself in the position of having her tools taken out of her hands, along with working to stay on the good side of both co-workers and clients.

Her charting of misogynistic seas has been a life filled with creative material related to identity, memory, and observation. Artwork filled with lines, incisions, clear and iconic figures embodied, and disrupted, by culture. Painting, drawing, sewing, and photography with figurative images – referencing and reviewing the complexities of the female life.

She holds degrees from Wimbledon College of Art, London, MA. and Mass College of Art, Boston, BFA.

Photographs by Zach Ellis

Closing Reception: 6 - 8 pm, Thursday, August 22nd, 2024, Artist Talk at 7:00 pm

Show dates: July 25th - August 24th, 2024

Gallery Hours: Saturdays, 10 - 2pm

Zach Ellis is a photographer whose work explores the human, natural and abstract. Through his artistic practice Zach is learning to pay better attention to what he is already paying attention to. His work is, at its essence, about the both/and, confronting and embracing conundrums and contradictions in the world and in himself. With a camera in hand all things become reflective surface, a mirror to the soul shining back what he hopes against hope to see more clearly.

Do you remember when the days were long?

Joe LoVasco

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 25th, 2024, 5- 8 pm

Exhibition Dates: Apr 25th - June 2nd, 2024

Gallery Open: Saturdays 12-4 pm

Joe LoVasco, a Merrimack Valley-based artist, engages with forms as the primary driver in his artistic practice. His drawings, mixed media, and sculptural works start with a loose gesture of a familiar form that eventually gets refined over several iterations. These forms tend to be a mix of distinct curves and angles, inspired by his surroundings and everyday interactions.

There are two distinctive series on display in the gallery- Dream Stack and Outlines. LoVasco’s Dream Stack series was born from observations of his then- infant son’s blocks and chunky toys. Early iterations of the work included smooth surfaces and rounded edges, whereas the most recent sculptures contain not only pointed corners, but a greater amount of visual and physical problem solving on the part of the artist.

The artwork on display has all been created within the past year at LoVasco’s home in Haverhill, MA. Working out of his renovated basement studio has allowed for plenty of planned and spontaneous visits from LoVasco’s 4-year-old son, Orlando. “Watching my son build his own sculptures from my scrap pieces, while also having the opportunity to learn from him, will continue to inspire me,” says the artist.

The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Thursday, April 25th, 2024, from 5-8pm. The artist, and his family, will be in attendance, and refreshments will be served, including special cotton candy treats crafted on site by Le Petit Pouf (lepetitpouf.com).

Show dates: March 14th - April 14th, 2024

Gallery Hours: Saturdays, 12 - 4pm

SJ Art Consulting welcomes multi-disciplinary artists Ingrid Ludt and Sand T Kalloch for a joint exhibition this March. This will mark our first dedicated drawing show, and we’re pleased to introduce each artist through this work.

Ingrid Ludt

Ingrid’s creative practice showcases a multidimensional approach to art making. This allows her to delve into the various aspects of the human experience and translate them into visual forms that resonate with viewers on an emotional level.

“Rooted in the art of observation and discovery, my creative practice revolves around honoring the natural world. The breathtaking expanse of the Earth’s landscape serves as my inspiration.”

Sand T Kalloch

Sand T Kalloch maintains a studio in Malden, Massachusetts. Her artistic output come in the forms of mixed media paintings, low relief, and works on paper.

“A simplifying approach to art-making is the driving force behind my work. The primary intention is to utilize the basic elements of visual language such as dot (point), line, surface (plane), color, form and light to create maximum visual impact.”

Reception: September 16th, 4-7 pm

Open by chance on weekdays

This September SJ Art Consulting is excited to present From One to the Other, an exhibition by Erica Licea-Kane. The exhibition features paintings and a series of framed drawings. Licea-Kane’s“paintings” are, in fact, layers of extruded acrylic atop a colorful, sometimes wood-burnt, often obscured, background. The topographical variation on the surfaces feel as if something has been caught and sewn into the woven surfaces. What’s inside, and why is it hidden? The map-like visual cues lead viewers away from what’s hidden underneath while at the same time drawing you inward, like an insect to a spider web. Trained in the generations-old practice of textiles, Licea-Kane creates timely examples of the beauty of meticulous, time and labor-intensive work.

A Shift in Control: New work by Dustin Schuetz

Opening Reception: Sat, Oct 22nd, 2022 from 5-8pm

Exhibition Dates: Sat, Oct 22nd - Sun, Nov 26th, 2022

SJ Art Consulting is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of new work by Dover, New Hampshire-based artist Dustin Schuetz, at our gallery in downtown Haverhill, MA.

Dustin’s work has always been process oriented- his command of each tool and medium is where he draws his inspiration. His earlier, post collegiate works are tight, strict studies of the control of materials- no evidence of brushstrokes, nor a piece of sandpaper to be found in his studio. Upon completing his graduate studies at the Pratt Institute in 2006, Dustin worked with artist Ryan McGinness, continuing his exposure to artists focused on a certain way of painting. It was only when Dustin first became a father, in 2014, that his work began to change, loosen; the results of which can be seen throughout his striking new work on display in “A Shift in Control”.

Though he works primarily in acrylic, Dustin also uses intricate paper weavings as underlayment and creates a dizzying array of visual planes with colored pencil. These pieces explore the tension of both wanting and releasing control, both within our art practices, and our life.

Working with and around artwork is an important part of Dustin’s art-making process. He currently splits his time between the Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy and here at SJ Art Consulting, serving as a Collections and Exhibitions Manager and professional art installer, respectively. It is within this context that we’ve had the opportunity to understand even more about Dustin as an art-maker- experiencing his enthusiasm for problem solving, his keen eye for placement, and innate knowledge and love for the act of creating artwork.

The public is invited to attend an opening reception of Dustin’s work on Saturday, October 22nd from 5-8pm. The artist will be in attendance, and celebratory refreshments will be served!

The exhibition will be on view October 20th – November 27th and in-person viewings may be arranged by contacting the gallery to schedule an appointment.

Unknown Creatures: New Work by Maria Denjongpa

The Gallery @ SJ Art Consulting, 43 Washington St. Haverhill, MA 01832

Exhibition on View: Sept 6th through Sept 30th, 2022

The Gallery at SJ Art Consulting is delighted to announce our inaugural solo exhibition featuring the sculptural work of Maria Denjongpa! Visitors to the show can expect to find a new series of colorful, pattern-heavy paper mache sculptures dancing around the walls. Maria utilizes a variety of other mediums throughout her work including sticks, bark, leaves, moss, jewels, paint, and feathers.

Be sure to time your visit right during the Artists’ Reception on Sat., Sept 17th because at 5pm Maria’s life-sized Unknown Creatures will come alive, and journey to the gallery to reunite with their friends. This special performance will be a first for downtown Haverhill, and you won’t want to miss meeting these new visitors in person!

Maria Denjongpa grew up in Massachusetts. She studied anthropology at Brown and spent much of her adult life teaching English in Sikkim (in the Eastern Himalayas). She began creating puppets and masks and spirit creatures out of paper mache in high school and has been making them ever since. Of her work, Maria says “I am interested in spirits—meaning the fears, joys, vulnerabilities and pride that reside in the bones of animals and people. I am curious what these spirits look like: their essential gestures and postures, their colors, patterns and shapes.” Information about Maria’s work can be found on our GALLERY page, and by visiting her website at mariadenjongpa.com

Gallery Hours are by appointment only, and can be made by contacting us at sarah@sjaci.com, (802) 999-5506, or through our website.
